DirtySock (3 out of 10 ) This story of a college that's just on the brink of going "woke" set from the perspective of kids who have their own lives they want and a world they have to adapt to. While the story is of the kids growing tired of voices pushing them to pick sides and conform to the past, it really does not move them forward. All the main characters that are black have character archs that are just banal, while the white characters share a one dimensional stereotype at best. Without a sense of irony, this serves itself a surface layer of responsibility for what is ultimately blaxploitation in the 21st century, ending with a blaxpoitation producer attempting to amplify racial tensions with a staged reality show. The gay kid finds his voice, the outspoken girl learns to shut up and listen to her inner voice, the jealous girl with no social following becomes a reality star, and the white kids are over the top racist from start to finish. There is a point where you think everyone is starting to see everyone else as equal, and then they multiply tropes and stereotypes for a prejudice double down.
Here's 3 reasons how I know this movie was made for old white ladies that want to pretend to be hip and with it, aside from a title that screams it is aimed at an audience that already has made its mind up:
Two characters are supposed to be written as well rounded and are into star trek seem to agree kirk¹ is best, DS9 and Sisco are never mentioned², and worst of all, they refer to each other trekkers³ not trekkies.
